Full Tour Details
We start our journey by heading north along the Bass Highway to Ulverstone, where we leave the highway and travel inland to the Leven Canyon. Leven Canyon is Tasmania’s deepest limestone ravine, some 275 meters deep, and from Cruickshank’s lookout you have the most breathtaking views down to the Leven River, which flows out into Bass Straight. There are many beautiful walks through out the Canyon, taking in the various wildlife and amazing ferns.
After an invigorating walk we head for Gunns Plains Caves where our Tour of the caves begins. The cave was discovered by Bill Woodhouse in 1906 while on a hunting trip. Your informative tour guides will show you the amazing limestone cave featuring spectacular flowstone formations, including one of the southern hemisphere’s largest calcite shawl formations, glowworms and underground streams in which you will find crayfish, fish, eels and platypus.
After this wonderful tour we head down the road to the Wings Wildlife Park, where we will stop for lunch before taking a tour of the park.
Wings Wildlife Park has the largest collection of Tasmanian wildlife, they also have deer, birdlife, meerkats, bison, eagles and of course Tassie devils, as well as many other animals. Most of the native animals at Wings Wildlife Park have been rescued following injury and are released into their natural habitat when rehabilited. Those unable to be released stay in care for the remainder of their lives.
We then make our way back to Launceston.
On this tour there are many steps and in the caves, some tight spots and areas where you need you watch above for obstacles. A medium level of fitness is required.
In the event of snow, the Leven Canyon is not accessible; a change of itinerary may mean that we travel on to Burnie to other areas of interest.
